Steven Snethkamp’s chamber piece, Dances from the Luminiferous Ether was performed by Chicago’s Fifth House Ensemble, and was chosen as the regional winner of the Rapido! competition. The piece will be performed again in Atlanta for the national finals and a shot at a commission from the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra.
Also, on 10/26, Disembodied for flute and tape was performed at the Museum of Modern Art in Barcelona during the LEM festival as the 2nd prize winner of the Luigi Russolo Competition. And in addition, his video work, Lunar Calligraphy 24 will be presented at the CSUS Festival of New American Music on 11/5. And in January 2013, his piece Lullaby for solo piano will be performed at the Florida State University Festival of New Music.
Melody Eötvös was recently awarded first place in the Soundstream National Composers Award after the world premiere of a new work for the Soundstream Ensemble Collective (Adelaide, Australia). The award results in a commission for a new work to be premiered in 2013.
Nicholas Cline has had a piece accepted into the SEAMUS Electroacoustic Miniatures 2012: Re-Caged. It will be released for digital download along with about 20 other pieces. This work was based on an earlier toy piano piece.
Elliott Bark's flute concerto Shalom has received 1st prize in Orchestral Category from The Music Association of Korea, one of the top composition awards in Korean, and will be performed on the 22nd November at Aram Nuri Arts Center (Haydn Hall), Koyang, Korea.
Sang Mi Ahn won the 31st Republic of Korea Composition Prize with her piece, Loki's Castle (2010). This is one of the most prestigious awards given to Korean composers of traditional and western music. The competition this year was held for composers of western music with prizes awarded to winners of orchestral/opera music, chamber music, and solo/song categories. Loki's Castle won the category for chamber music and will be performed at the Award Ceremony in the Goyang Aram Nuri Arts Center (Goyang, Korea) on November 22, 2012.
Nicholas Cline's...and the wind whispers... will be performed by clarinetist Arianna Tieghi on September 5th in Ravenna, Italy as part of the festival: Valori Giovani 2012.
Ezra Donner’sMountain Suite (2011) for String Orchestra has been awarded First Prize in the Respighi Prize Competition. Mountain Suite will be premiered by the Chamber Orchestra of New York during its 2012-2013 season.
Ezra Donner’s ¡Cigarra! has been awarded First Prize in the IMTA Opus Competition. The Opus Composition Festival is a competitive event designed to encourage students to create and write music. The Opus Composition Festival promotes creativity and educates students in the art and craft of musical composition.
Ezra Donner’s album of solo piano music, Steel Sky, has been released on CD and mp3. Described as "impresssive," "jazzy," and "often intensely energetic" (The Big City), the album features exciting, witty, and heartfelt contemporary music for solo piano, composed 2009-2011 at Indiana University. Melody Eötvös’Patoises II: SoW has been accepted into both the Electronic Music Midwest festival (Oct. 11-13 2012) and the Nashville Soundcrawl (Oct 6-10 2012).
Louis Goldford has just returned to the US after 3 years of active music making in Taiwan. Most recently his polystylistic contemporary improvisation and jazz group Flâneur Daguerre appeared for a lecture-concert at DamChiang University in Taipei (June). He has subsequently recorded a new piece for kanjira and live electronics called ????? (Du? B?o Gé F?ng Xiá) Curio Box for Kanjira + Electronics, with Taipei-based percussionist Cody Byassee.

Tim Miller has been offered a continuation of his teaching position at Indiana University Southeast. He will be teaching Rudiments of Music 1 and Music Theory 1.
Jeremy Podgursky'sMindjob (Version 2) was chosen as winner of the Contemporaneous call-for-scores. The piece was chosen out of a field of 144 international submissions, and will be performed by Contemporaneous at Bard College and in NYC in February, 2013.
Benjamin Taylor was selected as a participant in the 2012 American Composers Orchestra Underwood New Music Reading Session. His orchestra piece Leaving White was one of six works chosen including a piece by fellow IU doctoral student, Ryan Chase. These past summer months Ben has enjoyed playing trumpet with Mr. Taylor and his Dirty Dixie Band, a traditional dixieland jazz band playing the music of the early 1900's.
Elliott Bark's new string quartet (commissioned by Porterville Summer Strings) Tango Suite has been selected for the reading session (7/23) in Chicago by Fulcrum Point New Music Project.
Texu Kim’s orchestra work Splash has been selected from over 165 scores to be performed by the Minnesota Orchestra as part of the 2012-13 Composer Institute, to be held from January 7-11, 2013.

Congratulations to Tonia Ko and Francisco Cortés Álvarez for their recent premieres with the New Music Ensemble. Francisco received his commision as part of the Dean's Prize category B award in 2011, for which he composed his terrific Canta y no llores. Tonia received the 2011 Georgina Joshi Composition Commission Award culminating in a very successful premiere of her Many Splendid Forgettings, for tenor and chamber ensemble.
Ryan Chase and Benjamin Taylor have been selected to participate in the American Composers Orchestra’s 21st Annual Underwood New Music Readings. They were chosen to be a part of a group of 6 composers drawn nationally and from among more than 250 submissions. Following the readings, one composer will be chosen to receive a $15,000 commission to write a new piece for ACO, to be premiered during the orchestra’s 2013-2014 season. Ryan's work, The Light Fantastic, also received the 2012 Dean's Prize – category A.
Michael Sweeney is one of the 2012 recipients of the Morton Gould Young Composers Award, awarded to him for his composition Mr. Brain. Morton Gould, a Pulitzer Prize-winning composer, served as President of ASCAP and The ASCAP Foundation from 1986 – 1994. Gould, an eminent and versatile American composer, was a child prodigy whose first composition was published by G. Schirmer when he was only six years of age. To honor Gould’s lifelong commitment to encouraging young creators, the annual ASCAP Foundation Young Composer program was dedicated to his memory, following his death in 1996.
Elliott Bark'sReminiscence and Bach to the Future (both for string orchestra) will be performed by Orchestra Eleazar de Carvalho under the baton of Maestro Laercio Diniz on May 11 in Fortaleza, Brazil.
Steven Snethkamp and Matthew Peterson were recently honored as the winners of the "National" category for the Third Angle "New Ideas in Music Competition." Mathew was the winner of the National catergory with his work for solo violin Nacken and Steven was the runner up of the National category with his piece titled Disembodied.
Benjamin Taylor was selected as a travel grant award winner by the GPSO. They have awarded him $500 to help towards travel expenses so that he can attend the Gamma-UT New Music Conference in Austin, Texas in April. Ben has also received a Meet the Composer grant to attend the performances of Shipbreaking in NYC and Boston. Ben will be participating in preconcert discussions detailing his compositional technique and use of live electronics. In addition, he and Mr. Herchen will provide a hands-on demonstration of the max patch and allow audience members to audition the live effects. These activities are funded in part by a grant from New Music USA (formerly Meet the Composer). Also, on March 5th, the Cleveland Chamber Symphony under the direction of Steven Smith performed a chamber orchestra version of Ben’s composition Panic Later.
Jess Turner has had the following recent performances and workshops: North Texas Wind Symphony under direction of Eugene Corporon performed his Rumpelstilzchen for large wind ensemble; while guest composer at the University of Georgia's NeXt contemporary music festival, the UGA wind ensemble performed his Through the Looking Glass to open their concert; his Chamber Concerto No. 1 for solo sop. sax and wind octet was premiered by the Hudson Valley Chamber Winds with Joey Abad, sax at the CDBNA Northeast regional conference at Indiana University of Pennsylvania in Indiana, PA; and Rumpelstilzchen was performed by the Ithaca College Wind Ensemble under the direction of Steve Peterson.
Eric Lindsay'sCoronary Dance of the Destructive Sense has been selected winner of the 2012 Southern Indiana Wind Ensemble Composition Competition. The Southern Indiana Wind Ensemble will perform his piece on Wednesday, May 9, 2012, at Bloomington High School North.
Gabriel Lubell's piece Two Metric Studies for Trumpet and Drum Set has been accepted for performance at the 2012 conference of the International Trumpet Guild. It will appear as part of the New Works Recital on May 23 at Columbus State University in Columbus, Georgia and will be performed by trumpeter David Amlung and drummer Nick Lang.
Chappell Kingsland has been selected as a finalist in Center City Opera Theater's "Art Songs for the 21st Century" competition. Two of his songs will be performed on March 10 at a cabaret performance in Philadelphia.
Texu Kim's work Sketches for Contredanse, (2012)has been commissioned and Ensemble Modern GbR in Germanay and will be premiered by EM with conductor Peter Rundel on March 5 in Alte Oper Frankfurt in Frankfurt am Main, Germany.
Sang Mi Ahn’s two compositions Convergence for Alto Saxophoneand Electronics and Monologue for Tenor Saxophone are going to be presented by saxophonist Heidi Radtke Siberz (doctoral student in saxophone) at the 2012 North American Saxophone Alliance Biennial Conference. The conference will be held March 15-18 at Arizona State University School of Music.
Elliott Bark'sReminiscence for String Orchestra (2007) will be performed by The New York Classical Players (Dongmin Kim, director/conductor) on March 16 and 17 in Bohemian National Hall (New York, NY) and Chodae Community Church (Norwood, NJ).
Eric Lindsay's orchestra work Sambas Riscados was selected as the winner of this year’s Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra Audience of the Future Composition Competition. The piece will be performed by the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra on April 10, 2012.
Tonia Ko has won second prize in the 25th Annual Young Composer’s Competition at Austin Peay State University with her work Wanderer Moon for voice and chamber orchestra.
Matthew Peterson'sHyperborea for orchestra and Jonn Sokol's Gradient : Waves for chamber orchestra were recently awarded two of three "honorable mentions" for the 2012 ASCAP Nissim Prize. The top prize went to Gene Koshinski for his marimba concerto, and Ted Hearne was the other honorable mention.
IU faculty, composers and alums will have works performed at the SEAMUS 2012 National Conference at Lawrence University this February. Current students Felix Stone, Steve Snethkamp, Josh Groffman, alumni Iddo Aharony, Neil Thornack, Eric Simonsen, David Werfelmann and Professors Jeffrey Hass and John Gibson all had works accepted.
Benjamin Taylor'sLeap for chamber orchestra was chosen for performance at GAMMA-UT in Austin, Texas. The twelfth annual GAMMA-UT Conference and Concert will take place at The University of Texas at Austin on the evening of Saturday, April 14th, 2012. The newly-formed Sonorous Ensemble will be the ensemble in residence for the GAMMA-UT conference. This group is comprised of professional musicians in the Austin area who are experienced performers of contemporary music. The theme of this year's conference is "Music and Structures of Society." The keynote speaker for this year’s conference is bestselling author, cultural historian, critic, and music programmer Joseph Horowitz, who will give a talk on the future of classical music in the United States, in conjunction with presentations by selected student scholars.

Melody Eötvös' composition for fixed-media Die hohle Höhle, has been selected to be presented on the Sonic Rain Concert Series, Sunday, January 29, 2012 at the University of Oregon School of Music.
Jeremy Podgursky (DM) is the recipient of a 2011 Fromm Music Foundation Commission in the amount of $10,000. The supporting ensemble Jeremy will be writing for is the Lost Dog New Music Ensemble (NYC), and the proposed piece is for sextet. Founded by the patron of contemporary music, the late Paul Fromm, the Fromm Foundation is now in its fifty-sixth year, having been located at Harvard University for the past several decades. Since the 1950s, it has commissioned well over 300 new compositions and their performances, and has sponsored hundreds of new music concerts and concert series.
Benjamin Taylor's composition Keen Awareness was selected for performance by the U.S.O Project in Milan, Italy on a concert titled "Sonic Screens". Keen Awareness (2010) is a two-channel tape piece using minimally processed recordings of sharp objects; knives, saw blades, vegetable peeler, pizza cutter, scissors etc. The performance took place on November 26 at the venue called O'. Also, the Cleveland Chamber Symphony will be performing his chamber orchestra arrangement of Panic Later on March 5, 2012 at the Baldwin Wallace Music Conservatory.
Melody Eötvös' composition for fixed-media and video, Patoises: Wave I: Blue, was programmed in the FEASt (Florida Electro-Acoustic STudent festival) at the Wertheim Performing Arts Center concert hall at Florida International University, and presented on the 19th November.
Texu Kim's work Toccata Inquieta has been selected for performance by Ensemble Intercontemporain in January 2012. The first performance will be on Tuesday the 10th, in Paris at the Cité de la musique, salle des concerts, and the second on Thursday the 12th in Cologne, Kölner Philharmonie. The Renovo String Orchestra will be performing Natalie Williams’Triple Concerto (for Vln, Vla, Vcel and Strings) in Evanston on 12 January, 2012, at the Music Institute of Chicago. The ensemble is run by IU Alumnus, Matthew Cataldi.

Melody Eötvös has been selected as a finalist for the 2011 Iron Composer Competition. She will participate in the five hour final on the 17th September at the host institution Baldwin-Wallace Conservatory.
Ezra Donner’s one-act opera Antigone (2011) was performed in concert on May 27, 2011 at the University of Michigan’s MacIntosh Theatre. The performance, conducted by Nicholas Hersh from Indiana University, was also streamed live on the Internet via UStream. His Sonata Judaica (2006) was also performed on the ‘Last Mondays’ concert series in Philadelphia's Broad Street Ministry on May 30, 2011. This monthly event, curated by Hybridge Arts Collective, features performers in a wide variety of artistic disciplines. The performance featured Ezra Donner at the piano with New York-based clarinetist Mark Dover. Additionally Ezra's ¡Cigarra! was performed on the Produce festival at the Drucker Center’s Fasseas Whitebox Theatre in Chicago from July 8-29, 2011. The festival has been described by curators Lauren Warnecke and Timothy Russell as “an experiment in dance and music in four parts”, a nd was featured in the June 29 issue of Time Out Chicago. Mountain Suite (2011) for String Quartet was premiered at the Klasik Keyifler Composers’ Cauldron festival in Kapadokya, Turkey, on August 14, 2011. The program inlcluded private lessons and seminars in new music with Kamran Ince, Marc Mellits, and Michael Ellison, as well as nightly concerts and open rehearsals.

Melody Eötvös'Olber's Dance in the Dark for string quartet has received an honorable mention in the Margeret Blackburn Biennial Composition Competition 2011.
Ryan Chase has been awarded the William Schuman Prize in the 2011 BMI Student Composer Awards, which is awarded to the score judged "most outstanding" in the competition. His winning composition was Gold Rush for five violins. This special prize is given each year in memory of the late William Schuman, who served for 40 years as Chairman, then Chairman Emeritus, of the BMI Student Composer Awards.
Will Rowe has been awarded one of the 59th Annual BMI Student Composer Awards for his work Snapping Cellophane for viola and piano.
Elliott Bark has received a commission from Porterville Intensive String Workshop (CA) to write a piece for string orchestra for their annual concert. The piece will be premiered by the student orchestra in Porterville (CA) on 6/9/11. He has also been invited as a guest conductor and lecturer.
Francisco Cortés-Álvarez has been selected to attend the Music11 Festival at the Hindemith Foundation Music Center in Blonay, Switzerland, mentored this year by Matthias Pintscher, David Lang, and Joel Hoffman. Additionally, on May 22 Ensamble Nuevo de México will perform Un flamingo miniatura in Mexico City and Virtual Alleys was selected in the XXXIII Foro Internacional de Música Nueva Manuel Enriquez also in Mexico City.

Ryan Chase's woodwind quintet the filaments dance was awarded 1st prize in the National Association of Composers' 2010 Young Composers' Competition. His piece will be programmed on the next NACUSA National Concert.
William Bryant'sPrelude No. 5 Op. 40 "The Transfiguration of our Lord" for organ is receiving an honorable mention with the AGO organ composition competition. There will be a performance of the work at the Christ Church Cathedral in Lexington at the AGO Region V convention in June. The recital will be on June 12th. The piece will also be published with MorningStar Publishing Company along with the other winning compositions.

Tonia Ko'sMoon Lullaby for oboe, vibraphone and string trio received 2nd prize in the 2010-2011 Migratory Journeys International Composition Competition, sponsored by the Chinese Fine Arts Society. The piece will be performed in Chicago in early 2012.
Bin Li's piano solo My Hometown Far Away (2008) received the "Honorable Mention" in the 2010-2011 Migratory Journeys International Composition Competition.
Ryan Chase was selected as one of the three winners of the 2011 Composer to Center Stage Competition by the Albany Symphony Orchestra. In March, he will attend professional development sessions with conductor David Alan Miller, composer John Corigliano, and members of the orchestra. The selected piece, Arcade Glitch, will be publicly read and recorded by the Albany Symphony in May.
Also Ryan Chase'sJabberwocky! will be performed by soprano Ariadne Greif and Contemporaneous on April 1st and April 2nd in Woodstock, NY. The piece will also be recorded by the ensemble on an album featuring works inspired by Lewis Carroll.
John Leszczynski'sScherzo à la Britten will be performed on the US Navy Band's National Tour beginning this March.

JSOM shines at Florida National ConferenceThe Jacobs School of Music was well represented at the national conference of the Society for Electroacousic Music in the U.S. held at the University of Miami this past week. Electronic works by the Center for Electronic and Computer Music directors, Profs. Jeffrey Hass and John Gibson were performed by Michelle Yeunhae Lie (DM, violin) and Kati Gleiser (DM, piano), as well as Krissy Jones of Contemporary Dance. Additionally, works by the Center’s students Melody Eötvös (DM, composition), David Roberts (DM, composition) and Andrew Grathwohl (BM, Audio Technology) were selected for performance, an impressive honor, with Garrett Semmelink (BM, violin) performing one of Mr. Grathwohl’s two pieces. JSOM alumni Mark Oliveiro (MM, computer music), Christopher Cook (DM, composition) and Bruce Hamilton (DM, composition) also had works featured on the three-day festival.
Sang Mi Ahn has been selected as a winner of the 2011 Women Composers Festival of Hartford International Composition Competition. The winning piece Loki's Castle is going to be performed on a featured festival concert by the Hartt Independent Chamber Orchestra on March 2011.
Tim Miller has recently accepted a teaching position at Indiana University-Southeast for the 2011-2012 school year. He will be teaching beginning and Twentieth-century ear-training classes, Theory III, as well as composition lessons. His piece Sketches on Scars was recently premiered at the 2010 Midwest Composer's Symposium held at the University of Cincinnati Conservatory.
Elliott Bark's Winter Sketches for String Quartet (2008-09 Kuttner Prize; the same work that will be performed in 2011 Festival of New Music at Florida State University in January) will be performed by Juventas New Music Ensemble at The Boston Conservatory and The Museum of Modern Renaissance in Boston on 12/17 and 18.
Natalie Williams'Five Bagatelles for Piano Solo was recently awarded 2nd place in the Plathner's Eleven composition competition, and was also named as the Special Prize of Gintaras Janusevicius. Her piece Onericic, along with Five Bagatelles for Piano Solo, will be performed in Germany during 2011. More information about the competition can be found here:

Additionally, Natalie Williams reigned supreme by taking first place in the Analog Arts IRON COMPOSER competition at Baldwin-Wallace College, Ohio, on Friday, October 22. She was selected as a finalist from a nation-wide call for scores and competed alongside four other accomplished composers from across the country. Run in the same manner as the popular Food TV Channel show Iron Chef, the competitors were supplied with the secret musical ingredient of "sticks and stones," and asked to write a piece for Flute, Cello and Percussion. Natalie was crowned as the winner at a concert given at Baldwin-Wallace on the evening of October 22, broadcast live-to-air by WCLV. The award includes a cash prize and the title of "Iron Composer" for 2010.
Sang Mi Ahn'sfragile beings for 4-channel fixed media has been selected by the University of Iowa Electronic Music Studio for their call for scores from Big 10 schools. The piece is going to be performed on the December 12th concert in Becker Communications Building Lecture Hall on the University of Iowa campus.
Elliott Bark'sWinter Sketches for String Quartet ('08-09 Kutter Quartet Prize winning composition) has been selected for the 15th Biennial Festival of New Music at Florida State University. The festival will run from January 27 through the evening of January 29, 2011.
Mahlon Berv's Circus Fanfare will be performed at Yale University by the Jonathan Edwards College Philharmonic on November 6th, 2010.
Bin Li'sLake 1B11 was given "Honorable Mention" in the 2010 International Society of Bassists Competition. The piece was competing with 52 composers from 18 countries.
Jeremy Podgursky'sMINDJOB was premiered in July by ALARM WILL SOUND at the inaugural Mizzou New Music Festival in Columbia, MO. Jeremy was one of eight composers selected from over 120 international applicants to be premiered and recorded by the critically acclaimed ensemble. While at the weeklong festival, the chosen composers worked privately with mentors Martin Bresnick and Derek Bermel as well as individual members of Alarm Will Sound.
Jeremy Podgursky'sOUR BLISS, IT COMES IN WAVES was premiered by the Cal State University Northridge Orchestra. The premiere was in conjunction with the 7th annual Northridge Prize for unperformed orchestra pieces.
David Roberts'Concertino for viola and electronics has been selected by Electronic Music Midwest to be performed on the October 10th concert at Lewis University.

Elliott Bark's Shalom for Flute and Orchestra, commissioned by the New York Youth Symphony, received its premiere at Carnegie Hall (Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage) on May 23, 2010 by Flutist Alex Sopp and the orchestra under the baton of Ryan McAdams. Elliott Bark's autumn leaves canvas for Solo Harp won the 2010 Composition Competition Award at the Bowdoin International Music Festival and was premiered in The Charles E. Gamper Festival of Contemporary Music (Bowdoin College, Brunswick, Maine) on 7/31/10.
Natalie Williams has been selected as a finalist in the Iron Composer competition at Baldwin-Wallace Conservatory in Cleveland this October. The one-day competition will be held on 22 October.
Natalie Williams won a scholarship to attend the Society for Music Analysis, Summer School in Durham (UK) from 20-24 September 20-24. She is one of 30 participants selected and will be working with Professors William Caplin and Michael Spitzer.
Brendan Faegre was awarded a $14,600 grant from the American-Scandinavian Foundation to study composition at the Norwegian Academy of Music in Oslo, Norway for the 2010-2011 school year.
Brian Ciach’sPiano Sonata 2 was one of two works selected for the American Liszt Society Bicentennial Composition Prize. The two winning compositions will be performed February 19, 2011 at the 11 am session of the 2011 American Liszt Society Festival. The work will be played by Paul Barnes, piano faculty member at the U. of Nebraska and alumnus of Indiana University.
Eric Lindsay’sCoronary Dance for wind ensemble, was selected by the Cincinnati Conservatory School of Music on the Friday, October 22nd concert of the Midwest Composers Symposium.
