Three IU Composers Win 2015 BMI Student Composer Awards |
|
On May 18th, current student Patricia Wallinga as well as alumni Max Grafe (BM '11) and Tonia Ko (MM '12) were awared three of this year's nine BMI Student Composers. Max was also co-awarded the William Schumann Prize (best in show) with Daniel Silliman. The composers were chosen for their pieces, respectively, Dreams of War Time, Kheir: Fantasy for Clarinet and Sinfonietta, and Blue Skin of the Sea. |

Phillip Sink Wins 2015 Hermitage Prize While at Aspen Music Festival |
Phillip Sink won the 2015 Hermitage Prize while attending the Aspen Music Festival and School. The prize carries a $1000 stipend and a six-week residency at the Hermitage Artist Retreat in Florida. Sink was chosen by a panel of AMFS composition faculty and administration.
Sink received various other honors and performances this summer. His Flowers of Salt was selected for the Boston New Music Initiative call for scores and will be programmed in the ensemble's 7th season. His first video piece Frayed Cities was selected for the official International Computer Music Conference official DVD. In June, his other video works No. 2 was shown at the New York City Electronic Music Conference and To See in Color was included in an art installation for the Art and Science Days in Bourges, France. Finally, Phillip's Particulates, was performed at the Bang on a Can Festival this summer at the Massachusetts MoCA.
To cap it off, Phillip will join the faculty at IU-East this fall as adjunct lecturer, where he will teach courses in MIDI and Computer Music, Aural Skills, and Composition. |

| Corey Rubin Receives Summer Premieres |
Corey Rubin had pieces premiered in three cities this summer. His One Hit Song, for orchestra, won the Composition Competition at the 2015 Miami Summer Music Festival, and was premiered at the New World Center in Miami Beach, Florida by the festival orchestra. He also attended two choral premieres: A Burnt Ship was debuted in New York City by Choral Chameleon, and The Snow Man was given its professional premiere in Madison, Wisconsin by the Isthmus Vocal Ensemble. |

| Louis Goldford Receives Performances in Spain, Israel, and US |
Louis Goldford received performances in Buffalo, New York City, Spain, and Israel this summer, including premieres of The Fiction of Time Destroyed by NOMOS (Valencia) andUberrima Fides by the Meitar Ensemble (Tel Aviv). Additionally, Four Possible Čočeks was performed at June in Buffalo and included Sam Wells (flugelhorn); to whom the piece is dedicated. Travertine Hybrid #3 was also performed at the New York City Electroacoustic Music Festival by violinist Lauren Cauley. | Charie Oh's Sextet for Piano and Wind Quintet - Hommage to Francis Poulenc was performed by the Korea Woodwind Ensemble, which is comprised of players from top orchestras in Korea, on Sunday July 26th at 8:00pm in the Seoul Arts Center. |

Four IU Students Take Part at 2015 IRCAM |
This past summer, CECM students Kimberly Osberg, Kenji Kuriyama, Grant Luhmann and Michael Kim-Sheng attended the CIEE-IRCAM computer music composition course sponsored by the Jacobs School and IU Overseas Studies. Housed in Paris for a month, they studied interactive software programming with MAX/MSP and IRCAM-developed applications, contemporary music aesthetics and much more. In addition, they were able to participate as guests of IRCAM and the Manifest Festival, and attend the first performance in many years of Boulez’s ground-breaking work with electronics, Répons. This is the third year CECM has been able to offer this summer study opportunity to its students. |

Texu Kim (DM '15) Renews KSO Composer-in-Residence Appointment |
|
Texu Kim (DM '15) has been reappointed as the composer-in-residence of Korean Symphony Orchestra (KSO) for another year. He will be commissioned one piece to be premiered by KSO in 2016. Additionally, Texu's DM dissertation Ko-Oh for solo viola and orchestra will be premiered by KSO with Yura Lee (AD in viola performance) during their Europe tour for the 30th anniversary of its foundation, including a performance at Brucknerhaus on 10/4 as a part of Brucknerfest in Linz, Austria. Two IU Alumni Win Barlow Endowments |
|
Alumni Benjamin Taylor and Neil Thornock received Barlow Endowments for Music Composition and were commissioned to complete a new work for large ensemble. Taylor will work with the Calidore String Quartet with the Bellingham Symphony Orchestra, while Thornock will work with the Merbecke Choir.

Jihyun Kim (MM '15) Anticipates NYC Performances |
|
Jihyun's piano piece Three Etudes has won the 2nd prize of Samadis' International Composition Competition 2015. It will be performed in NYC, recorded and published in an album under the Samadis' record label during 2015-2016 season. Additionally, Jihyun's string quartet Extempore Anamnesis has been chosen as a winning composition of PUBLIQ Access 2015. It will be featured in the PUBLIQ Access showcase concert at the DiMenna Center in New York City, on September 26, 2015.

Update from Brendan Faegre (MM '10) |
The New York Youth Symphony has commissioned a new work from Faegre through their First Music program, to be premiered in Carnegie Hall on May 29th, 2016. The title of this piece is Collective, and it is motivated in part by Harvard psychology professor J. Richard Hackman's research into the life and work of orchestral musicians. Faegre's goal with this work is to write music in a way that helps to increase the satisfaction of the musicians through giving them more ownership and control over the material they play. Faegre's Dirt to Gold for chamber orchestra was performed this summer by the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, Cabrillo Festival Orchestra, and Lake George Music Festival Orchestra. At NJSO the concert was part of the Edward T. Cone Composition Institute, directed by Steven Mackey and JoAnn Falletta. At Cabrillo it was part of the Conductors/Composers Workshop, directed by Marin Alsop and Huang Ruo. At the Lake George Music Festival it was part of Faegre's stay this summer as New Music Advisor and composer-in-residence. |
Prof. Jeffrey Hass, along with Prof. John Gibson, CECM students and alumni Phillip Sink, Samuel Wells, Louis Goldford, Christopher Poovey, Nicholas Cline, Bruce Hamilton and Jinghong Zhang had works selected for performance at the 2015 International Computer Music Festival, hosted by the University of North Texas this September.
In addition, Prof. Hass received a 2015 Collaborative Research and Creative Activity grant from Indiana University to create a three-dimensional projection mapping and digital sound installation.

| David Dzubay |
David Dzubay's septet version of Producing For A While was premiered June 2 by ONIX at the XXXVII Foro Internacional de Música Nueva Manuel Enriquez in Mexico City on June 2. Later in June, Carl Topilow and the National Repertory Orchestra performed Ra! and the IU Philharmonic led by Thomas Wilkins performed Snake Alley In July, Dzubay returned to the Brevard Music Center for three weeks, teaching composition and conducting readings with orchestra and band. He has begun composing Through a Glass, Darkly – Symphony No. 2 for band, a 25-minute work commissioned Scott Weiss and the University of South Carolina, along with a consortium of other wind ensembles. As well, Dzubay was selected as winner of the 2017 Sackler Prize and will be composing Rapprochement, a 35-minute double concerto for flute and violin with winds and percussion.
For interested IU students and possible visiting students, David Dzubay will be teaching G550 New Music Conducting during the first six weeks of summer in 2016 (approx. May 10 - June 16), with an enrollment cap of six.

| Claude Baker |
Claude Baker’s Hor che’l ciel e la terra for Twenty-Four-Voice Chorus and Four Percussionists was commissioned by NOTUS: IU Contemporary Vocal Ensemble and was premiered by the group in January at the Jacobs School of Music.
In the spring, he was selected as the winner of the inaugural Ronald G. Pogorzelski and Lester D. Yankee Composition Competition sponsored by the American Guild of Organists. The new work to be written as a result of the prize will be given its world premiere on the recently installed Pogorzelski-Yankee Memorial Organ at Indiana University of Pennsylvania in March 2016. The performer on that occasion will be Kola Owolabi, Professor of Organ at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.
In May, Dr. Baker was invited to be a visiting scholar at Yonsei University in Seoul and presented two weeks of lectures, master classes and private lessons for the composition students there.
In January 2016, his piano concerto, From Noon to Starry Night, written to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the founding of the IU music program, will be given its European premiere by the Staatskapelle Halle, with Claire Huangci as the soloist.
