Clarinet Audition Requirements
BME, BSOF:
All major and minor scales through 4 sharps and 4 flats One slow etude, one fast etude One solo from the standard repertoire
BM, VS:
All major and minor scales through 7 sharps and 7 flats One slow etude, one fast etude Two contrasting solos from the standard repertoire Orchestra excerpts
MM, DM, PD, AD:
All major and minor scales through 7 sharps and 7 flats Three contrasting solos from the standard repertoire Orchestra excerpts
Note:
1. No applicants for any of the degrees/diplomas are required or allowed to use a pianist.
2. The term contrasting solos does not mean two movements from the same sonata or concerto; they should be by different composers and different stylistic periods.
3. All students will be required to do some sight-reading, an ear test and a rhythm test as part of the standard audition.
4. All DM students will take a two-hour written clarinet literacy test on the day of their audition. This exam will test a student’s basic knowledge (and ability to write) about the acoustics, pedagogy and repertoire (solo, chamber and orchestral) of the instrument.
